How to Do the Toc Toc Dance

A step-by-step toc toc dance tutorial for the leg lift, the arm position and the bounce on the beat, plus how to skip the rehearsal and generate the clip from one photo.

What the toc toc dance is

The toc toc dance is a short in-place dance built on four ingredients: a knee lift, both arms held out, a light bounce, and a knock-like rhythm the whole move is named after. It has no travel and no partner, which is why it spread through living rooms and bedrooms rather than studios.

If you searched for how to do the toc toc dance, this tutorial covers the move itself. If you would rather skip the rehearsal, you can generate the clip from one photo instead and let the template carry the timing.

The four parts of the move

  1. Stand in place. Feet roughly hip-width apart, knees soft, weight centred. The dance does not travel, so you never need floor space.
  2. Lift one knee. Raise it to about hip height, then set the foot back down. Alternate legs so the lift becomes the pulse of the whole dance.
  3. Hold both arms out. Elbows slightly bent, hands open, palms facing forward. The arms stay up through the whole move and open a little wider on each knock.
  4. Bounce on the beat. Let the knee lift land on the beat and keep a light bounce in the supporting leg between lifts.

Finding the rhythm

The rhythm is a knock: two quick hits, then a short pause, then two more. Count it as "toc, toc, rest, toc, toc" and let the knee lift fall on each knock. Once the pattern is in your body, the arms and the bounce follow without thinking about them separately.

Common mistakes

  • Overthinking the arms. The arms stay out and open slightly on the knock. They are not the focus; the knee lift is.
  • Lifting too high. Hip height is plenty. Higher lifts throw off your balance and slow the bounce.
  • Locking the knees. A locked supporting leg kills the bounce and makes the whole move look stiff.
  • Watching your feet. Keep your eyes up and your chin level so the move reads clearly on camera.

Filming your own version

If you want to film it, prop the phone at chest height, keep the room lit from the front, and stand far enough back that the knee lift stays in frame. A vertical 9:16 frame matches where the clip is going to live.

Skip the rehearsal

The toc toc dance is easy to learn and harder to land on the beat under pressure. If you only want the finished clip, the generator takes one photo and returns a 12 second video of the same move with your face in it. The timing, the arm position and the bounce all come from the template, so you never have to film yourself at all.

Upload one photo, keep the prepared template, and choose a resolution. The template page explains exactly what stays fixed in the clip.
